Emeline’s “6 foot deep” Is A Tantalizing Dark Pop Gem
HELLO EMELINE! SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE! LET’S START, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Hello! For sure. I’m a singer, songwriter, actress, and musician based in Los Angeles.
TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU STARTED MAKING MUSIC?
I have always loved music since I was a kid. I started writing when I was 8 years old and had a band with my neighbors. We would perform our music at our lemonade stands to get extra tips. I always knew it was something I wanted to pursue for my life. I think it’s kind of cool that I ended up really pursuing my childhood dream.
WHO INSPIRES YOUR PLAYING STYLE? WHICH ARTISTS CAN WE REFER TO?
Stage-wise I am inspired by FKA Twigs’ presence. One of my favorite live shows I’ve ever seen was Childish Gambino, who completely immerses himself in the intensity of his character onstage. I don’t try to embody any other artists on stage but I do think being able to embody that confidence and character is a work of art in itself.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE? HOW DO YOU START WRITING A MUSIC PIECE? HOW DO YOU BEGIN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
When writing, I often freestyle my melodies and lyrics at the same time. Half the time the words that naturally come out end up staying in the song, it’s subconscious. I’ll go back and make life realizations about what’s really going on inside my heart listening to what I say during freestyles. Songwriting feels like my fortune teller and life guide sometimes. Other times my writing is more calculated but there’s something I love about letting loose and seeing where my brain wants to go. It’s important as a pop writer to understand the formula to it, but I think straying away from it is often where a song finds its personality and uniqueness.
LASTLY, WHAT ARE YOUR MUSIC GOALS FOR THIS YEAR, AND HOW ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD ACHIEVING THEM?
I have been working on my musical project for about three years so this year my goal is to create a roll out and share it with the world single by single! I also want to do a series of self-directed music videos, the first of which was “6 foot deep” and it is now available on my YouTube!
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?
Just that I’m very excited to be sharing my creations and thank you for supporting independent artists!
