Interview with Canadian Music Producer Wertyo

Over the past three years, Wertyo has quietly and steadily carved out a niche in the worlds of vaporwave and classical music. Consistently putting out releases and unafraid to drastically pivot sonically, his musical projects are always conceptual in nature and designed to supplement famous works of art or historical events. Now, his music is enjoyed by people on every continent. Today, we had the pleasure of sitting down with him and ask him the pressing questions the fans want to know!

Congratulations on finishing your new album! How are you feeling?
Wertyo: “Thank you! I’m doing well. It always feels great to have completed a new project and send it off into the world. This is an album I’m really proud of, so I’m very excited to finally share it after all this time working on it. I can’t wait to hear what people have to say about it.”

You’ve said that Luna // Sol is a concept album. Tell us more about that.
Wertyo: “Concept albums aren’t a new thing for me, but this time around I did it a little differently. I knew that I wanted to split the album into two distinct pieces. This is evident in the title, the two discs the album is on, and the polarized feeling of each half. Luna is comprised entirely of solo piano songs that are calming and pretty. Sol is lively and energetic, featuring many instruments from different cultures around the world. The album is a collection of themes for lunar and solar dieties throughout history. For an authentic feel, I used instruments from the respective regions.”

What kind of production equipment do you use?
Wertyo: “I use Logic Pro X on my Macbook Pro, controlled by a Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk2. Lots and lots of kontakt libraries! You can never have enough instruments to play with. If I need guitar, I’ll do that myself though with a Schecter and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. For my older albums I used to use FL Studio, but I migrated for the deep Komplete Kontrol integration in Logic Pro X.”

What do you like to do when you aren’t composing?
Wertyo: “I love to collect video games! I’ve got a pretty substatial collection of retro games and consoles. I have a soft spot for Pokemon and Kirby. Don’t get me wong- I love PC gaming and built my own desktop too. On there I’m usually playing League of Legends or MTG: Arena.”

Can you tell us about any future plans?
Wertyo: “Well I’m always thinking about the next thing, but I tend to be pretty tight lipped until there’s something substantial. I guess you’ll just have to wait and see!”
