Interview with Trending Kids Photographer Gabito Rohh

Gabito Rohh is a photographer specialising in kids, also a producer of some of the most important fashion shows in Spain, Italy & Germany. Own studio in Barcelona and also the creator of the KIDS FASHION CAMP.

Hello Gabito Rohh, Welcome to Blackbird News!

Why kids?
Why not? Kids are amazing, are pure and are sincere, they show you when they are enjoying and when they are not, they are creative, they are sensitive, they are adorable, they are simply fun!

Can every kid be a model?
Even though we want to think that all kids can be everything they want, this is an industry that has to fill certains profiles and needs, so, to be very clear, All kids can do pictures…. yes…. can all kids be models… sadly no.  as dry as it sounds.

How do you as a photographer make sure that the child you want to shoot looks the way you want it to?
It’s not easy! you have to make them feel comfortable, they need to think that what they are doing is important, but at the same time fun and achievable… it’s important they get rewarded when they do right and also get motivation when they don’t… the key with kids is always try the positive reinforcements.

From your point of view, what makes a good kids fashion picture?
For me, the most important is that you can feel something, play with the eyes, also the connection between the kids and the camera, cheesy pictures or over pose goes far of what i consider good… sometimes, the kids will give you more than expected, just follow them, let them do what they feel comfortable. you’ll get a surprise.

Since the photography techniques and equipment change quickly, it is important to stay up-to-date. What do you do to always keep up with the times?
They said that equipment do not make a good photographer, but the equipment is as important as other factors, of course the taste and style is the most important thing, but if you have the equipment to back it up that would be the best way to express your idea, I personally change cameras every year, and lenses every 2 or 3 years. but I will keep some of my old gear that helps me to stay connected with my origins….

Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices with which it is possible to take pictures. What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and any other hobby photographer?
Is incredible to see how people can make incredible pictures with an Ipad or a  mobile, it’s nothing wrong with this, and actually now people can express themselves with easy tools, but lets not forget that a photographer is not only the one that press the button, is more than that, is the one that can play with the subject and get their emotions printed….

Which one is your favorite lens and why do you prefer it?
The one I like most is my 24/70mm Canon, is very versatile, when you work with kids you have to react fast and be ready to shoot in any conditions, this lens allows me to do that… When I have more time and had a specific photo plan, I shoot with my 50mm and my 70/200mm from Canon also,

Who influenced you the most? Is there any other photographer that you consider as a kind of idol?
Many of them……, all the instagram gives me many ideas, but if I had to choose my hero that would be Peter Lindbergh. i love the way he gets the true story of the scene and the model…. simply love his work.

What, in your opinion, is most important to consider while shooting kids portrait pictures?
Lighting… no question, with lights you can get any emotion, you can make a kid look incredible, you can show their soul…. no doubt… lighting.

Which editing software do you usually use? How good would you describe your skills in that software?
We use software like photoshop to retouch pixelswise, but for kids we do not correct any shape or factions… we only use it to correct grounds, scars, lighting, or any issue with the looks, ect… I personally don’t believe in making kids look like plastic dolls. so we do not support any software to edit pictures digitally.
We also use CAPTURE ONE, the real jewel, as this software edits the raw file and organizes our shoots….

In your free time, what kind of pictures do you like to shoot and which ones do you avoid?
I always love to do editorials, when the photographer has total freedom and do what we think is best!… I avoid all related with landscape… I rather enjoy them and not shoot them… ; )
